What is a channel operator/moderator?

A channel operator/moderator or commonly shortened to op, is a person that is operating a channel as the words says. Operating a channel can be different from channel to channel, but the difference is more in the channel rule set then it is in the job "operating a channel". Operators are easy to identify. They all have an @ in front of their nicknames.

They are responsible for maintaining the modes of the channel, the banlist, and moderating any unwanted activity. IRC channel operators should not be confused with IRC operatorIRC operator.
